Fall is the time to craft containers that lean into the rich textures and warm tones that only Autumn plantings can provide!
As temperatures dip and Summer annuals begin to fade, the Autumn equinox presents a natural opportunity to replant container gardens that will coincide with the change in seasons. Fall container plantings are the perfect way to set the stage for the slower pace of Autumn, with plant combinations that highlight diversity found in both foliage and flower form and invite you to pause and appreciate subtle details. These container plantings celebrate cozy color palettes, flowers along with seed heads, and foliage that ranges from wispy grasses through to bolder leaves.
Perennial flowers like Rudbeckia, Agastache, and Echinacea go hand in hand with annuals like Pansies and Mums, and sit in perfect contrast with textural foliage elements like Ornamental Grasses or Heuchera and Kale to create a multi-dimensional Autumn container masterpiece.
In this blog, we share design tips and planting ideas to help you create stunning Fall containers that will carry you through the whole season.

Design Tips for Stunning Fall Containers
Autumn container plantings can read like a colorful harvest festival, a muted and chic exercise in porchscaping, or can go moody, embracing the darkness and spookiness of the days ahead. There is no wrong way to craft your Fall color palettes, but here are some of our best tips and favorite plants for how to do it! Container gardens are most impactful when they:
- Complement the aesthetic of your home
- Speak to your existing plantings
- Feature a color scheme that you like
Fall containers should incorporate fresh, seasonal annuals alongside hardy, perennial, and evergreen plants mixed in to add depth and beauty that will carry your display well into Winter. Planting schemes can be potted directly into a high-quality, weatherproof ceramic pot, or into a plastic container that can be easily inserted into your existing ceramic pottery.

Use the simple formula of “Thriller, Filler, and Spiller” to create dynamic Fall container plantings that will attractive and balanced, and determine whether to lean into more seasonal elements or design a container with a longer stretch in mind using one of two strategies:
Seasonal approach: Use lots of Fall-specific colors, and textures, including annuals, and in Spring, remove all Fall and Winter annuals and then transplant any hardy plants from your Fall container into the garden, freeing up space to design a completely new combination for Springtime.
Year-round approach: Rely heavily on hardy and evergreen plants as the foundation of your container design for a look that you will enjoy for many years to come and replace small accent seasonal annuals as needed.

Fall container garden planting is best done from September into mid-October, at least 6 weeks before our first frost in the Pacific Northwest, so new plants have time to root in and fill out before growth slows down in Winter. If you miss that window, we always have a fantastic selection of drop-in pots ready to add instant Fall feelings to your patio garden!
The Best Plants for Fall Containers in the Pacific Northwest
Autumn is the perfect season to showcase rich colors, textures, and seasonal charm in your containers. These classic Fall plants provide vibrant blooms and foliage that create eye-catching displays, turning ordinary pots into warm, festive focal points.

Fall Container THRILLER Plants
Hybrid Rudbeckia, Dahlias, and Herbaceous Grasses provide striking, classic Fall interest, and tall varieties make dramatic additions to Fall container gardens. For easy replacement with Winter thrillers, consider keeping them in pots buried in the soil instead of planting directly.
Evergreen Shrubs or Conifers can provide a sturdy, year-round filler in large containers, and those with irregular shapes look especially well-suited to Fall themes and aesthetics!

Fall Container FILLER Plants
Garden Chrysanthemums (Mums) love cool Fall conditions, bloom best with some sun and rain protection, and last 4–6+ weeks. Large plants make the perfect stand-alone container plant, and smaller pots are perfect for mixed containers. While often grown as annuals, in-ground Mums can return as perennials with proper care.
Ornamental Cabbage and Kale thrive in Fall through early Winter and tolerate mild frost, which intensifies their foliage color. Upright varieties like ‘Redbor’ work as thrillers, while rosette types are an ideal filler and offer low, colorful foliage in white, pink, or purple.
Ornamental Peppers and Shorter Fall Annuals like Dusty Miller add pops of color and Fall-focused textures to container gardens to further emphasize a desired color palette.

Late-blooming perennials like Echinacea, Agastache, Scabiosa, and Salvia brighten September and October with flowers and offer attractive seed heads that feed birds through Winter.
Evergreen perennials such as Heuchera, Euphorbia, and Heather make sturdy fillers that offer vibrant foliage that withstands the colder temperatures of Winter.
Evergreen grasses like colorful Carex or striking Black Mondo Grass add texture, movement, and visual contrast, bringing depth and dynamic interest to Fall containers.

Fall Container SPILLER Plants
Pansies and Violas are hardy Fall annual flowers that can survive snow and even ice! Blooming is consistent and strong in Fall, slows in Winter, and resumes in Spring, lasting until April or May. Pansies and Violas thrive in cool weather with full/partial sun and make great Fillers or Spillers.
Trailing, evergreen groundcovers like Wire Vine, Vinca, and Creeping Jenny (before it dies back) make bright, textural additions to Fall containers and will drape elegantly over the sides of pots.

PRO TIP: Layer in Bulbs for Early Spring Color!
Planting dormant Fall bulbs when refreshing your Fall containers is an insurance policy for fabulous Springtime blooms. Crocus, Hyacinth, Narcissus, and Tulips are our favorites for their vibrant, fragrant, low-maintenance Spring color.
Container Garden Care Tips for the Fall Season
Want your container gardens to look their best all season long? Our Container Planting, Care & Maintenance blog covers the basics—but here are a few extra tips tailored to keeping your Fall containers healthy and thriving:

1. Refresh the Soil: If you have existing containers, Fall is a great time to swap out Summer soil, as it gets "tired" over time, becoming devoid of nutrients and struggling to hold moisture. Replace it fully, or at least the top third, and mix in compost or worm castings to keep plants thriving.
2. Fertilize Containers: Soil biology works slowly in cool temps making nutrient availability less reliable, so it's important to feed your Fall containers appropriately. Use slow-release fertilizers like Osmocote or E.B. Stone Organic Rose and Flower Food at planting time, then again in Winter.
3. Water Smart: Fall rain often takes care of watering, unless containers are sheltered under eaves or porches. Check container gardens weekly and water young plants more often. In Winter, most containers need only half the water they did in Summer. And be mindful not to let saucers under pots fill with rainwater!
4. Protect Against Cold: Before a potential freeze, water thoroughly and protect tender plants with frost cloth, burlap, or even a blanket. Wrap ceramic, plastic, and terra cotta pots in bubble wrap for extra insulation. Rotate containers monthly if they’re pressed against the house so plants don’t lean toward the light.
